Ukrainian officials said Russia fired missiles into Kyiv on Thursday — as United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited the capital city to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Two missiles hit Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky District, the Kyiv Independent reported, adding that there were no air raid sirens at the time of the strike.

"Russia [struck] Kyiv with cruise missiles right when [Guterres] and Bulgarian PM [Kiril Petkov] visit our capital," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote in a tweet

Mykhailo Podolyak, Zelenskyy's top advisor, said the strikes hit downtown Kyiv during Guterres' official visit.

The extent of the damage and number of casualties was not immediately known.

Guterres had reportedly just wrapped up a press conference with Zelenskyy when the strikes occurred. The UN chief met with Zelenskyy just two days after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Prior to his meeting in Kyiv, Guterres also toured the areas around Kyiv that were the target of Russian bombardment earlier in the war.
